Akilee, a regional ‘Energy Efficiency Champion’

  • Senegalese power company Akilee has been awarded the title of ‘Energy Efficiency Champion’ in the Economic Community of West African States.
  • The award sanctions several milestones achieved by the company in just a few years.
  • Senegal is a leading regional country in renewable energy and power with an electrification rate well above the continental average.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through its organization dedicated to the promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy, awarded Akilee the Energy Efficiency Champion Award, during the ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Forum 2019  (ESEF2019) in Accra, on 24 October 2019.

“More than a reward, we see this as an encouragement to continue our efforts in the innovation and promotion of technology, serving our Economic Space,”Akilee said in a statement.

Akilee has elaborated its strategic plan that aims at making it the key partner of African power utilities, to help them become more efficient, better known and serve their customers, with the help of cutting-edge technology.

Akilee was created in 2017, after three years of development, by doctor engineer Amadou LY, who used to work for French electricity giant EDF. Under Amadou Ly’s leadership, the company has achieved several milestones in the Senegalese power sector, including signing a major partnership contract with national electricity company SENELEC. The start-up will provide SENELEC with key digital advanced services and capabilities to control their energy losses, increase their operational efficiency and transform their customers experience.

“I think that we will see more emerging new solutions, ‘Africa driven’ as I call them because some of the problems we want to address exist only in our countries, so generic solutions sometimes do not fit. This development will be carried by software engineering companies, which can be as well start-ups like Akilee as giants of the technology industries. The leadership of our authorities will be key here to help emerge and strengthen our start-ups,” he noted.
