Senegal seeks Nigeria’s assistance in developing energy sector

Senegal’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Mr Mansour Kane, has turned to Nigeria for its assistance in developing Senegal’s energy sector, focusing specifically on petroleum.

Minister Kane met with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama, to discuss the development of the petroleum sector in Senegal.

Minister Kane said: “As you know, we just discovered a lot of oil and gas and we would want to take advantage of the experience from Nigeria. I think we have to work with our counterparts in Nigeria and also with the Ministry of foreign Affairs to learn how to avoid mistakes.”

Minister Kane also told ThisDay that the country is ready to follow in the footsteps of Equatorial Guinea – which learned from Nigeria when it discovered oil and gas and has since become a big player in the sector in Africa.

He added: “What we want to do is to learn from our brother Nigeria, at the state level and also at the private sector level; local content is very important. We know that there are some Nigerian companies that already that have experience and will want to have a joint venture with us, to work with Senegalese companies to help us to develop the sector.”
