Nigeria launches mini-grid developers association

In a bid to increase electrification across Nigeria, the West African country officially launched the Africa Mini-Grid Developers Association (AMDA) in Abuja.

The association is comprised of mini-grid developers, individuals and organizations dedicated to Nigeria’s off-grid power sector development, aiming to expedite the development of mini-grids and related regulation in the country.

“We believe it is time for Nigeria to develop its energy sector by leveraging on the benefits that alternative sources of energy such as mini-grids present. We therefore call on all stakeholders to join us in building an industry that has the capacity to eradicate energy poverty not only in Nigeria, but throughout the African continent,” said Alexander Obiechina, President of AMDA Nigeria.

Key financial institutions, such as the World Bank, among others, are expected to fund up to $350 million for Nigeria’s Electrification Project to provide electricity to communities that do not have access to electricity.
